BISHOP DWENGER HIGH SCHOOL ~ SERVICE PROGRAM
The purpose of the Student Service Program at Bishop Dwenger High School is to help students learn to live out their faith as disciples of Jesus Christ by loving God and their neighbor.
“I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35
The command to love one another (charity/service) extends to all our sisters and brothers in Christ. As we love others we demonstrate our love for God, to praise Him. The Student Service Program teaches that charity is a virtue developed through the habit of service in Jesus’ name.
Charity is the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1822)
SERVICE HOUR GUIDELINES FOR 2024-25
As part of a Christian education, our Catholic identity, and our mission statement, all Bishop Dwenger students are required to complete service hours outside of school hours for human beings.
Dog sitting is not accepted, nor service to animal shelters for either semester.
Each student is required to complete a minimum of 20 service hours each school year. Ten hours each semester as outlined below.
- Seniors & Juniors: 10 service hours to the poor, underserved, and needy, due first semester to Mrs. Yorke, Pastoral Ministry. Must be from the approved list – see below.
- Seniors & Juniors: 10 flex hours due 2nd semester to Mrs. Yorke, Pastoral Ministry, that is service to neighborhood, school, church, family.
- Sophomores & Freshmen: 10 flex hours are due first semester to Mrs. Yorke, Pastoral Ministry. Service to school, church, neighborhood, family.
- Sophomores & Freshmen: 10 list hours for poor, underserved, and needy due 2nd semester. Must be from approved list – see below.
Deadline dates are below and listed on verification service cards.
Flex hours are service to any population as neighborhood, school, parish, family- without pay.
List hours: Service sites that target the poor, underserved, and needy that are found on the list below.
Hours are due November 15, 2024 first semester and April 17, 2025 for second semester. Service verification cards with signatures are due to Service Coordinator at that time or before. Both hours and reflection paper (or project) are part of their semester grade; no credit for partial work. Again- Required service hours does not include service to animals.
- After second semester service deadline is past, students are encouraged to begin service for the following academic school year. Summer is the best time to accomplish these hours.
- Service for the poor must be chosen from the service list; otherwise, it will not be accepted. Exceptions must be approved before work by Mrs Yorke
- Each student may choose his/her own site, but all 10/10 hours must be served at ONE site in order to build a rapport with those served.
- Students MUST CALL AHEAD to the location and make appointments for orientation and mutually convenient times to do their service work.
- Each student will have his/her own verification card that is to be completely filled out by the student and signed by the site supervisor each time hours are served.
- Summer hours are be turned in the first week of school to Service Coordinator, Mrs. Yorke, in Pastoral Ministry.
- No late or incomplete work will be accepted for credit or award.
- Any complaints from your site will result in a zero for your work and no credit will be given.
- Written service learning paper /project to Theology Class.
- Service hours completed as part of a requirement for a parish program or other organization may be applied to BD service, except that which is court mandated.
- Transfer students will see Service Coordinator to make arrangements for completed service.

Help babysit the children (2 years old and younger) who are not old enough to participate in our peer support groups. The time frame would be 6:30-8:30 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (pizza included) in September. We would prefer if they were able to commit to coming twice a month on the same night if possible. For example, the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month from 6:30-8:30 PM. That way they would be working with the same children and families. But we are willing to work with their schedules too. We don’t have a lot of children that fall into this category, but it would be so nice to offer this service to the parents and guardians who are currently unable to go into their peer support groups because they need to watch the little ones. Requirements: Comfortable working with young children, ages two and under in a child friendly environment. Babysitting and Child Care Training with the American Red Cross would be a plus.
