  • Solar Eclipse Spring Break countdown continues...
Solar Eclipses are not the only type of eclipses that we have. While we would never have noticed this last night due to the rain, we had a different eclipse last night in the form of a lunar eclipse.  This eclipse finished at 5:33 this morning and is known as a penumbral Eclipse. This type of eclipse always comes as a pairing to a solar eclipse as the earth, moon and sun remain aligned for that long of a time period. This type of eclipse is not as spectacular as a Full lunar eclipse, they still can create some interesting views for the night sky. For all budding astronomers, the Next lunar eclipse is on September 17th of this year.

How is it that we get a solar eclipse? They only happen when we are at a phase in our lunar cycle called a new moon. The sun, moon and Earth are directly in line with one another for a total solar eclipse. We call the progression of a celestial object moving across the face of the sun a transit. There are other items that have made a transit across the Sun in recent years. One such Transit happened in 2012. If you know what moved across the sun back in 2012, stop by Mrs. Walker and tell her for a candy prize!
